Why do we also teach hula?
SURFCORE owes its origin and inspiration to the Hawaiian islands, so we are committed to doing our part to preserve and further the culture, arts, traditions and history of Hawai'i.
The Hawaiian monarch, King David Kalakaua said “Hula is the language of the heart, therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people.” We are honored to share the gift of hula with your child as s/he learns coordination, grace and teamwork through working on both modern and traditional hula in the keiki (children’s) class.
What is hula?
Hula is the dance form of the Hawaiian culture. It accompanies mele, Hawaiian song or poetry. Every mele has a story, and hula helps tell that story. In this way, hula is the physical expression of our thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Hula helps us honor and perpetuate the Hawaiian way of being and the spirt of aloha.
Our studio and everything we do at SURFCORE is guided by these Hawaiian values:
Kokua - to help one another
Malama - care for one another
Akahai - patience with one another
Lokahi - recognize others, be recognized, help others, be helped
Olu'olu - flexibility and kindness
Aloha - to love and care for one another
Kuleana - to take care of your responsibilities.
We share these values with our clients so they can apply them to their everyday life.
